  Maintaining Your Mouth
Without routine maintenance to keep your teeth and gums healthy bad things can happen. Here are a few rules of the road to help you towards a healthy smile.

  • Replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months or sooner if it appears worn.
  • Pick a toothbrush with soft, nylon bristles that have round ends and a small enough head to easily get where you need to get. What you need to remove – food debris and plaque – will come off just fine with a soft brush and it’s kinder over the long term to your teeth and gums.
  • Brush your teeth twice a day using a pea sized amount of toothpaste. Slow down and do a good job or risk missing spots that will decay or promote gum disease.
  • Brush your tongue to remove bacteria and freshen your breath.
  • Floss every day to promote health gums and remover food between your teeth that brushing misses.
  • Mouthwash and rinses are okay, but they don’t replace proper brushing and flossing.
  • See your ADA/MDA member dentist at least twice a year to have your teeth cleaned and you mouth checked for any problems. They’ll also review with you proper techniques of flossing and brushing, customizing your daily regimen to your specific needs. Prevention and attention to small problems now avoids the bigger problems that can cost more and be more painful if left untreated.
